A Nose Will Do Fine

A few days ago I had a portrait to shoot that involved a couple of dogs. I love taking pictures of dogs, it is one of my favorite things to do. There are usually certain words you can say to your dog that makes them stand at attention and look at you or at least be still for 1/500 of a second. You may say the word "treat" or "who is it" or "cookie". Whatever it is, using that word can help you get some good images of your four-legged friend. Especially if you have food readily available!

All you need to do is have your camera settings ready and hold the treat above the lens and say "that" word, that word that stops them in their action and causes them to hold a pose. I always try to focus on the eyes. Usually if the eyes are in focus it gives the shot a bit of personality and it evokes the ultimate praise from the viewer, "Ahhh"

On this portrait shoot I had a problem. The dogs are Wheaten Terriers and they are gorgeous dogs, but they have no eyes. Well, if they do have eyes I never saw them. All I saw was hair. In all their bouncing and running and playing, all I saw was hair. So what is a photographer to do when the eyes are under the hair and your normal focal point is compromised? Simple. The nose will have to do!

Hope you....

Enjoye!
If you have a good dog photography secret feel free to comment at the bottom of this post. Have a great day. Now everyone say, "Ahhhh"
