First Flight

This summer I was able to have an experience that few photographers ever experience. A friend of mine called and said her neighbor had a hummingbird nest and wanted to know if I wanted to see it. We planned a time and Lib and I drove to Burke County to see the nest. It was incredible. The nest was very small and build on a wind chime shaped like a pig. The nest was built right between the eyes and on top of the pigs nose. It was very intricate with spider webbing for comfort and lichen around the outside for protection. Amazing.

I was able to get a lot of pictures since the nest was on the deck. So within a week we were able to visit 3 times and had the great opportunity of watching these little creatures grow. Oh the third trip, I sat up me tripod, got a couple of shots, and then I heard a scream coming from the itty-bitty nest. One of the two siblings began to move around and wiggle so much that the nest was shaking. Then all of the sudden this three week old baby hummingbird took off. It was his first flight! And he screamed like he was on a roller coaster all the way down to the next tree.

Did I get a picture of the first flight? Even I can't move that fast. But I did get to see that little Hummer on the first flight of his life. And I think I heard him scream "Geronimo" all the way down!
